A sitemap is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users. It can be either a document in any form used as a planning tool for web design, or a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organized in a hierarchical fashion.
Google introduced Google Sitemaps so web developers can publish links from across their sites. The basic premise is that some sites have a large number of dynamic pages that are only available through the use of forms and user entries. The Sitemap files can then be used to indicate to a web crawler how such pages can be found.
Since Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and Google use the same protocol, having a Sitemap lets the four biggest search engines have the updated page information. Sitemaps do not guarantee all links will be crawled, and being crawled does not guarantee indexing. However, a Sitemap is still the best insurance for getting a search engine to learn about your entire site. XML Sitemaps have replaced the older method of “submitting to search engines” by filling out a form on the search engine’s submission page. Now web developers submit a Sitemap directly, or wait for search engines to find it.

A while back, I talked about the process of building your authority online. Part of that post had to do with building high quality inbound links. There are two types of links that are important for SEO – inbound and outbound links.
Outbound links are links that start from your site and lead to another one, while inbound links, or backlinks, come from an external site to yours. Backlinks are extremely important because they are a measure of the popularity of your site among the web audience. Not all backlinks are create equal. There are good and bad backlinks. Good backlinks are from reputable places like sites with a similar theme or within your business’ industry and have a high Google Pagerank. Bad backlinks come from questionable places such as link farms and should be avoided if you can.
So how do you build backlinks to your site? First, look at suitable sites to backlink to your site using a backlink builder. After you identify potential backlinks, it’s time to contact the Web Master or Marketing Manager of the site and start negotiating terms. Sometimes you can agree to a barter deal where you will exchange links. They will put a link on their site to yours and vice versa.
After you have build a large network of high quality sites linking to yours, the search engines will view your site as a reputable resource for whatever it is you are offering online. Now get out there and build some inbound links!
