Use your own web designer to create a custom Eden website

Preation has built a module into Eden that allows web designers familiar with XHTML and CSS to make changes to a website’s overall design.  This module is the “Theme Admin” module (not to be confused with the “Theme” module which is used for your site’s theme settings).  By using the Theme Admin module, you can select any of our 5 ready-to-use free templates and customize them to meet your needs.

You can also use the Theme Admin module to create custom elements and additional theme settings.  All the designer needs to make these changes is an FTP client such as EditPlus and knowledge of XHTML and CSS.  We support any designer making changes on an Eden site so they are not alone in figuring out how to do it.  This way, if you have contracted a web designer or are using an internal design resource for a custom design you can still use Eden for its CMS and SEO purposes and get the best of both worlds!

How to use Eden’s subnavigation element

Here at Preation, we often get requests from our Eden clients to do two things:

  1. How can we easily show navigation links directly on a page without having the user dig through the navigation?
  2. How can we create these links without displaying them directly in the navigation?

Both of these items can be addressed by using the subnavigation element.  This element is located under the “General” tab while editing a page.  Its primary purpose is to display any parent navigation tab’s subnavigation directly on the page.

Google Instant Search and your Eden site

Google recently announced their new Instant Search feature.  Here are some of the benefits of Google Instant Search:

  1. Faster Searches: By predicting your search and showing results before you finish typing, Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search.
  2. Smarter Predictions: Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need.
  3. Instant Results: Start typing and results appear right before your eyes. Until now, you had to type a full search term, hit return, and hope for the right results. Now results appear instantly as you type, helping you see where you’re headed, every step of the way.

This feature illustrates the continued shift in increased levels of traffic to your website for shorter keyphrases.  This is perfectly inline with Eden’s SEO best practices as you should always consider both long and short-tail keywords to optimize your site with.  By doing that, you’ll solidify your place at or near the top of the instant search results.

Small Business SEO Tip: Stay informed using RSS feeds

A great way for you to stay up to date with the latest trends and information in the SEO realm is to use RSS feeds to get all of your information in one centralized location.

RSS, or Really Simply Syndication, is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works – such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video – in a standardized format.  They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place.

By subscribing to the SEO gurus’ RSS feeds, you will receive the latest and greatest information that the web community has to offer without having to search all over the internet.  I use Google Reader as my RSS feed and I love it.  Try it out and stay informed!

Small Business SEO Tip: Use as many pages as you can on your website

We’ve all seen the sites with five total pages.  Each page has a skyscraper’s amount of content on it.  How do you intend on optimizing a page that has 10,000 words on it?  The answer is you can’t.  There is too much content and not enough focus on the targeted keywords.

I tell all of my Eden clients when entering content to abide by the “KISS” rule.  No, not the rock band, but the acronym that stands for “Keep It Simple Stupid”.  Search engine optimization is all about keeping the messaging on each unique page of your site clear, concise, and focused.  You cannot optimize one page on your site for the 18 keywords you’re targeting.  Instead, you should create 18 individual pages on your site and optimize each one for one keyword.

Not only will this keep your pages focused and allow for greater optimization, but you will also continually create new pages and make your site larger.  The search engines love large sites and by adding more pages, Google will notice your ever-changing sitemap and consider your site up-to-date, relevant, and fresh.  This will help your Google page rank and your position in the organic search engine results.
