What is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is the process of creating high quality website content that is so compelling that it attracts attention from your target market. Although content marketing is often used to maintain and nurture business relationships with existing customers, today I’ll be talking about how businesses are using content marketing to find new customers and build new relationships.

Let’s think for a moment about the ways that people find your website right now. Your website gets visitors who click through from a link on another website, visitors who type in your website address directly, and visitors who find your website by conducting a search using a search engine. That’s pretty much it. Visitors who click through from another website or find you through the search engines are often discovering your website and your business for the first time. From a marketing standpoint these are very important visitors because they represent opportunities for your business to build new relationships and sell your products or services.

So, since 1) other websites that link to you and 2) the search engines are such an important source of new prospective customers for your business, how do you get more traffic from them?

In this article you’ll learn the three components of high quality content and how you can build a lifetime of free traffic to your website with content marketing.

5 tips to properly optimize your webpages

Optimizing your website for the search engines does not have to be a challenge.  If you follow the simple guidelines listed below, you can increase the amount of qualified traffic coming to your website and decrease the amount of money you spend on SEO.  Think of these tips as pieces of the overall SEO puzzle.  Once you’ve completed them all, the search engines will know exactly what each page on your site is about.  Before you start optimizing your site, you must first determine the keywords/phrases that correspond directly to your business’ core offering.   This shouldn’t be too difficult as no one knows your business better than you!

  1. Take a list of 1-3 target keywords that describe the topic of the page.  Change the page title (the text you see in the top left hand corner of your web browser when you are viewing the page) to include these keywords.
  2. Place those same keywords in the meta keywords and meta description of the page.
  3. Make sure your page has one heading that is relevant to the page title and the rest of the text on the page.
  4. Increase the focus of the page by adjusting its text headings and content to include its target keywords more frequently.
  5. Make sure you do not have too much or too little text on each page.  You should try to keep it around 500 words per page.  If you have too much content, divide it up into two pages to improve its clarity and focus.  Include half the content on the first page and the rest of the content on the second page.  Link from the bottom of the first page to the second.

If you do not have access to any of these areas with your current content management system, or do not understand how to change them, consider switching to the easy-to-use Eden Platform CMS and optimization tool.

The four most important things to consider when adding a page to your website

When optimizing your website for the search engines, nothing is more important than the right content.  Your content should include key-phrases that match your business’ core offering.  Each page should focus on a maximum of three key-phrases so the search engines know exactly what the page entails.  The search engines should not have to guess what your pages are about.  You can remove the guess work by keeping the focus narrow on a per page basis and by building your site out using a well-structured navigation.

The key-phrases should be placed in all of the most important content areas of your site.  These areas include:

  • The page title.
  • The meta description and meta keywords.
  • The main headings and sometimes sub headings.
  • The body content.

You can change each of these content areas easily within Preation’s Eden Platform.

The amount of content you have on a page can also be a factor as to how the search engines rank your page.  If you have over 500 words of content on a page, consider shortening it to around 300-400 words and creating a new page with the remaining text.

Another key factor is the freshness of your content.  Lewis of WebMastersHelpGuide.com states on his blog that by updating your website with fresh new content frequently, you will improve your ranking in the search engine.  Plus, if a visitor arrives at your site and finds that you have outdated content, they may immediately go elsewhere.   Don’t risk becoming a boring website to your visitors and the search engines.  Update your website at least weekly.

Testing, Testing..One, Two, Three Landing Pages

Ask just about any Internet marketing professional how important testing is and they’ll quickly tell you it’s essential. But ask them how much effort they actually put into testing and their response may be a bit more equivocal. Conducting effective marketing tests on a regular basis is like flossing your teeth: everyone knows they should do it, but many people skip it all too often.

Why is split testing important? In a blog post on Mediverso.com, they stated that split testing has the potential to increase the income generated from your site, simply by observing and analyzing the psychological behavior of your prospect.

Testing different calls-to-action, form locations, and layouts can yield results that can have a tremendous impact on a business’s success. WebProNews.com cites Encyclopaedia Britannica, for example.  They were able to use multivariable testing to optimize their landing pages for visitors coming from sites such as Dictionary.com in order to better target key consumer audiences.  They then saw a 48% lift in revenue via increased subscriptions and a net revenue increase of 28% over a 4-week period.

What is the difference between A/B Split Testing and Multivariate Testing? This blog post from InternetMarketingInc.com explains is wonderfully.  A/B testing is about testing different versions of web pages to see which ones convert better.  Multivariate Testing (MVT) is about testing different versions of content within the same page.  Both methods are great ways to test and optimize your marketing campaigns.

By testing and optimizing your landing pages, you will see an overall increase in revenue coming into your business from the web.  You will be able to implement the landing pages that your visitors respond to in a favorable manner on a consistent basis and prevent wasted advertisement dollars.

Recurring events fill your calendar & save you time

In Preation’s February Eden code release, we made the ability to add recurring events available within the calendar module.  This is a wonderful enhancement that can save you both time and effort when it comes to adding events to your calendar.

Prior to this enhancement, if you wanted to add an event that repeated every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, you had to manually enter in each event from week to week.  With recurring events, the work is done for you.

To utilize this feature follow these easy steps:

  1. Login to your Eden website.
  2. Click on the Calendar module.
  3. Click either “Add Event” or “Edit” an existing event.
  4. Fill out or edit all of the pertinent event information including the start and end date.
  5. Click the “Recurring Event?” check box.
  6. Click the check boxes of the corresponding days that you would like the event to repeat on.
  7. Click “Submit”.

Your event will now appear on your calendar on the dates that you selected until the end date of this particular event arrives.  Be sure to stay posted as more improvements to the calendar module are coming that will make it an even more powerful tool!

Do the undo

We’ve all been there, toiling away at a very important document on Microsoft Word, when all of a sudden it happens..”Oh no! I didn’t mean to delete that!”.   We breathe a sigh of relief when we realize that all is not lost.  Lo and behold, the undo button.  By hitting the undo button in your toolbar, you will undo the last action you performed.

This action can also be performed while editing a content element within Eden by using what’s known as a “hotkey”.  A hotkey is a keyboard shortcut that uses a finite set of one or more keys that invokes an operation when triggered by the user.  The hotkey for undo is Crtl+Z.

Now whenever you’re editing a content element, you can rest assured that if you accidentally delete some text that it is not lost and gone forever.
