I tell all of my Eden clients when entering content to abide by the “KISS” rule. No, not the rock band, but the acronym that stands for “Keep It Simple Stupid”. Search engine optimization is all about keeping the messaging on each unique page of your site clear, concise, and focused. You cannot optimize one page on your site for the 18 keywords you’re targeting. Instead, you should create 18 individual pages on your site and optimize each one for one keyword.

Not only will this keep your pages focused and allow for greater optimization, but you will also continually create new pages and make your site larger. The search engines love large sites and by adding more pages, Google will notice your ever-changing sitemap and consider your site up-to-date, relevant, and fresh. This will help your Google page rank and your position in the organic search engine results.

This tip was brought to you by Preation’s Eden Platform.

Google introduced Google Sitemaps so web developers can publish links from across their sites. The basic premise is that some sites have a large number of dynamic pages that are only available through the use of forms and user entries. The Sitemap files can then be used to indicate to a web crawler how such pages can be found.

Since Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and Google use the same protocol, having a Sitemap lets the four biggest search engines have the updated page information. Sitemaps do not guarantee all links will be crawled, and being crawled does not guarantee indexing. However, a Sitemap is still the best insurance for getting a search engine to learn about your entire site. XML Sitemaps have replaced the older method of “submitting to search engines” by filling out a form on the search engine’s submission page. Now web developers submit a Sitemap directly, or wait for search engines to find it.

You can use Eden to submit your sitemap to Google. By doing this, you will alert Google and the other search engines whenever you add pages to your site, ensuring that they are crawled and indexed sooner rather than later.

How do you make it better? You can first start with a redesign of the site to make it more aesthetically pleasing, but this will not help with your SEO. For that, you must revisit your content and decide which keywords are most important to your product/service offering. From there, you can use a content management system (CMS) to input your keyword rich content.

The benefit of using Preation’s Eden Platform, is that you get the CMS and SEO built right into the website. Eden tells you exactly how to optimize your pages for the search engines so you can align yourself perfectly with online success.

It is within the “Traffic Sources” tab in Google Analytics where you can find out which keywords people are using to find your site. This is very valuable information because the more you know about the keywords that are used to find you, the more you can optimize your site for said keywords.

When you make a change to a page’s content or title in Preation’s Eden Platform, we automatically alert the search engines to come and crawl the new page so they can index it appropriately. The more often your site is spidered, the more likely Google will consider your site to be up-to-date and relevant for your targeted search terms (keywords).

Another thing to remember is to be patient. Organic SEO is NOT about instant gratification. Results often take weeks, even months to see. This is especially true the smaller you are, and the newer you are to doing business online. If you are looking for instantaneous web-marketing results, consider setting up a Google Adwords account.

“If you absolutely MUST have your main page as a splash page that is all Flash or one big image, place text and navigation links below the fold,” the post continues. I always tell our clients who are interested in using Flash that the search engine spiders are not human eyes. They cannot see a beautiful image of your product, they can only see an image tag and therefore, they can not determine what the image is about, they NEED actual text on the page to update their index and provide relevant results.

Your pages should have a keyword density of about 5%. Anything more than that and you begin to sound “robotic” and repetitive. Anything less and you’re not giving your keywords enough exposure and the search engines disregard their importance.
